Hello all,
First let me say this site rocks! Wonderful information.
I've been getting my gear list together and was trying to decide on sleeping systems. I've seen some GREAT lightweight hammock systems out there, but the problem is they are really made to tie in trees. The systems I've seen for ground sleeping start off around the 25lb mark. Way too much weight, so I was trying to find a lightwieght ground support system. I've been actually thinking of taking about 4 pieces of lightweight material and making my own, but I wanted to check with everyone here to see if anyone had encountered anything like this before.
So the basic setup would be.
1. Lightweight hammock. Found some online that are extremely light.
2. Ground support structure, of course lightweight.
I'm thinking basically of 2 "sticks" to each side. The two sticks would be pointed toward the hammock and out to an angle. Then the rope portion would pull back on those two and be tied to a stake in the ground.
Any ideas on material, or something that is already out there?
Edit:
Just had an idea. I have some extra chainlink fence poles laying around. I'm going to take a look at these and see what it would take to make two extremely small supports. As long as the bottom of the hammock will clear the ground I think it will work. My only concern is weight and packing ability. I'm going to take a look at it today and see what can be done. Luckily I already have a normal tree hammock, so I can test it out if it works.
Still let me know if anyone has any other ideas.
End Edit:
Thanks so much for the site!
