Stoves
Modified By gbercaw on 9/11/2007 7:41:59 PM)

When we hiked the trail we took an alcohol stove that we made.  It worked really well.  One of the reasons we took this was we had no idea what the availability of fuel cartridges were along the trail.  I thought maybe some other hikers might know some of the main spots to refuel.  Anybody?  Thanks!

Re: Stoves

Though alchohol stove work fine it's the butane stoves that are more frequently used here. Refuling is relatively easy along the trail. Rikushet camping stores can be found almost anywhere along the trail. Eilat and Be'er Sheva being the only two places in the Negev. Look for locaion at  www.rikushet.co.il it's an Hebrew site only, Lametayel too.  If you carry one spare container it's enough. And if you don't cook everyday (I believe you won't) then one spare container is more than enough.

Re: Stoves

If a butane stove is what you want to use, you probably will need to buy one when you get to Israel, because most airlines don't like camping stoves. I'm not really sure what you would do when you finished the trail -- maybe give the stove away? I guess if you finished in Eilat you could leave it with the nice folks at the Shelter hostel, and they could help find a good home for it.

Butane stoves are nice and easy to use. Since using the Cat Stove, though, I don't think I'll ever go back. So cheap, light, and easy. And if the airline takes it away, you can just build a new one when you get home!

Re: Stoves

I was looking into making one of these and came across this on e-bay.  I went ahead and ordered one, for a few bucks, it's worth a try.

I bought from a different person, becuase they had a windscreen too, but it's pretty much the exact same thing.  I'll let you know how it works.

Re: Stoves
In Scandinavia we always use these ones: http://www.partioaitta.fi/product_info.php?cPath=1_20_40&products_id=6987
They work in the same way as your cat stoves (as far as I can understand) but is a compact mini kitchen.

Re: Stoves

Just got this stove in.  WORKS LIKE A CHAMP.  The only drawback I've seen so far is it burns through the fuel pretty quick, but then again, I didn't add that much.  I may try putting a little fiberglass in the bottom.  Anyway, just a thought.

Re: Stoves

hey,

i also have a question on stoves: i have the msr whisperlite fuel stove. up to now i had no problem taking the empty! fuel bottles into airplanes (iceland, romania), does anybody have any experience with taking a fuel stove and bottle into israel?! i just know that sometimes they can be quite picky at the airport...

plus does it even make sense to take a fuel stove on the trail? i guess there must be any gas stations along the way, plus that thing actually lasts quite a while.

Don't see a problem with fuel stoves as far as gas stations are concerned. In the south you have two long streches without gas stations on the trail, from Arad to Mitzpe Ramon (8-9 days) and then all the way to Eilat (10-12 days). Most hikers use here gas stoves, the gas tanks are easier and last long enough.
