for posterity: Cameras and stuff

I recently saw a helpful note in Backpacker.  The just of it was:  Write down your name and personal info. on a card and then take a pictue of it.  If you happen to lose your camera then this may increase your chance of getting it back.

Yeah, I'll definitely do that next time. Might also put a sticker or something on it with my in-country cell phone number, too.

I've never thought of that, but that's a great idea! There are definitely some people out there who would make an effort to return it. It certainly couldn't hurt.

A lady at my company lost her digital camera while she was traveling in Italy. Fortunately, she'd left some pictures on there from a company event before the trip. The person that found it researched the company name (from the logos in the photos) and emailed a few of the pictures to the contact information found online. With a little research, they identified the employee and gladly had the camera returned.

Re: for posterity: Cameras and stuff

That's some crazy detective work. Thank goodness the people weren't just like, "Sweet, new camera," and never thought about it again.

After I left my camera in a guy's truck in the Negev, I felt like an idiot. Then I tried to think back and figure out whether there would be any way for him to know who the camera belonged to, or where to send it. Unfortunately, I don't think it would have even been possible. So, in exchange for a free ride through the desert, this guy ended up with a fairly nice Kodak digital camera. At the very least, he was rewarded for his kindness.
