gear and other questions

just for background info: i want to start the trail in the south around mid february 2010.

this leads already to my first question: how are the night/daytemperatures during that time? how dangerous or possible are floods then?

i want to tent out there in the desert. i read different things about camping though and am not sure if it is allowed now or not. i didn't think there are any set up campgrounds in the desert? is it possible to use pegs in the desert ground or would i have to settle with rocks to keep the tent in place?

and then the most important question: how to set up water supplies in the desert? i do have a gps but i am not sure if it is worth taking since it adds up to some extra weight to carry.
i wondered if you just get someone to drive you to certain spots in the desert along the trail and then bury water bottles there? about how many of those spots would be necessary and how much water per site do you bury?

thanks for any tips!

Judit,

You have all your questions answered in the guide. I recommend you get a copy and you'll get tel. #s for logistical support in the desert, info. about places to cache water, avg. temps. and much more. You can leave the GPS at home, you won't need it. Enjoy the hike!
