Sleeping in summer

I'm heading off to Israel on Thursday for classes and a ten day hike in the north during August.  As I'm packing and thinking about what it was like when I was in the country last year, I'm thinking of just leaving my sleeping bag here.  From what I can remember, the temperature was hot/warm twenty-four hours a day.  So I'm thinking of simply bringing a thermarest pad to sleep on and something like a light blanket or sheet to wrap myself in.  Any thoughts on that?

Also, I'm hesitant to sleep under the stars as I'm a little worried about stuff like scorpions and the giant mouse sized spider who inhabited my shoe last year, so I'm thinking about bringing my tent.  I know it's a bit of weight (~ 5 lbs/2 kg), but I also wouldn't have to be concerned about mosquitoes.  Are those things even a problem there that time of the year?

Re: Sleeping in summer

What up, Sojo --

I think it will be really hot during your trip, but if you have the guts to do it, you'll do it. You're familiar with the usual disclaimers about hot summer hiking, right?

Going without the sleeping bag might be a good idea, but in that case, yeah, I think you'll probably want some kind of mesh netting at the very least. You might not need a full tent -- can yours be pitched without the fly, mainly as a bug shelter?

There's moisture in the north, even in summer -- you might end up near an irrigated area or a drainage ditch even if you're away from, say, Banias or the Kinneret. And where there's moisture, there's the potential for mosquitoes. I think you'd do well to bring some kind of shelter just in case.

Man, best of luck on the hike, and I hope you post here about it when you're finished!

Re: Sleeping in summer

Thanks, Shay!

Yeah, I already took the fly out of my tent bag, so I'll just have it for protection from mosquitoes (thanks for the info) and other creatures.  And I've heard the stuff about summer hiking, I have some friends who did the trail last summer at the same time I'll be doing it this year.  בעזרת השם =)

I'll definitely fill you all in with how the hike goes when I come back, too.  I've really appreciated this website and all the advice you guys have given, it's helped a lot.
