Forum Help

Who has the bits to create new forums?  I looked unsuccessfully for a "create new forum" button or a "contact the forum administrator" button.

I'd like to open two new forums inside "Backpacking info," one called "Safety," and one called "Traveler's Info".  Many of the comments in the two "General" categories relate to these two.

After they get opened, who has the bits to move posts from one forum to another, to populate those forums with the relevant posts in the other categories?

Re: Forum Help

Nope, I don't have moderator access.

Here's the story: last year, during the IDF's campaign in Gaza, a pro-Palestinian bush-league hacker inserted some code into the forums that redirected people to another website. The best solution at the time was for moderators to approve posts. We switched a lot of things around at that time, and now we need to reevaluate.

I plan on maintaining more of a presence around the forums, even as my Ph.D. work picks up (!), but even once my account has moderator status again, I'll have to learn how to use the tools. Right now Greg supervises the process, and he does a great job, considering that he works full-time, has a family, and receives zero financial compensation for his work on the website and the forums. But I'll be the first to admit that we need to get some things in order around here. Regarding that, Yankale has done a great job of being a solid presence in the forums, and his comments have been invaluable to a lot of people.

Ashen, you have good ideas, but even once we modify security settings, individual users won't have the ability to create new forums. We'll consider your ideas, for sure, but the first order of business will be making sure everyone's posts are visible in a timely manner.

So I'll keep you posted -- you'll hear more from me and/or Greg about this soon. Meanwhile, keep posting, discussing, questioning, and (politely) debating! These forum posts, by themselves, are going to develop into a valuable resource for hikers. And you guys represent the beginnings of a community both inside and outside Israel that understands and loves the INT, and which appreciates its unique character.

Re: Forum Help

So wait - who _does_ have moderator access?  That is, if all the posts currently require moderator approval, who are the mysterious moderators doing the approving?

I'm not suggesting that the settings be changed so that anyone can open up new forums, but rather that whoever does have the authority open the forums I suggested.  Is that you, Shay?  Or is it the Greg you mention?

Re: Forum Help

I, Greg, moderate the forums.  I will work on getting the forums added.   It may take a few days as I am really just the moderator and have very little to do with the creation of the site and the forums.  I will talk to the team member who does know how to that and when she has time she will get it added.

Also, thank you for all the posts!  You really have added new perspective to the forums.
