Re: INT Guide and Maps

Hi

I have never been to Israel and just want to know if the following shops(Tzomet Sfarim, Rikoshet, Lametayel and  Stiematzky) are available in Eilat?  Since that is where I am going to start my trip and would like to buy the INT guide there if possible.

Thanks

Albert

Yes: There are a Tzomet Sfarim book store, a Steimatzky  book store and also a Rikoshet (camping and sporting goods) store in Eilat.

If you spend the first night in Tel Aviv (30 minutes from the ariport) you can buy it in Tel Aviv

Re: INT Guide and Maps

In Feb of 2008 I started my INT hike (Sobo) with naught but a Michelin map and a keen year for those plentiful three color trail markers.  Every other hiker I met had the Hebrew guide and/or the very expense topo maps-which were also in Hebrew.

I had the opportunity to meet the author of the (then) unpublished English guide book. He loaned me an advance copy of the text.  Having a guide book completely changed my hiking experience!  Suddenly, I knew what was in front of me: where to sleep, where to eat, how far to water.  To have a guide to share with you the history of the land along the trail...wow.

My talk at the Seattle REI is on 26 Feb. at 1900.  I have a tenative title of:  The INT:  500 miles and 10,000 Years of History.  Please come an join me!

The three essentials for the INT:  water, a sun hat and Jacob's guide book!

Matt

Re: INT Guide and Maps

Thanks again for the info.  One last question.  If I don't find a hiking partner to do the trail with me is it possible to take it on alone, or should'nt I even attempt it?  I really want to do the hike from south to North.  Do you think if I don't find a partner on this website is there a good change of finding one in Eilat?

Thanks

Albert

Re: INT Guide and Maps

If you are planing to hike the trail ,you must have this guide with you.

As an hebrew speeker that walked the trail, I only can say that the sort of information you would find in the "Hike the land of Israel" guide , you won't find even in hebrew.

There are no maps in english avalable , the only one in english arein this book. The day per day planning and other suggestions are very detailed and well described. Public transport connections and other attractions description are also make things more easy to plan , in case you don't want to walk the trail as he is. Trail angels , true Israely hospitality , the list is there.

The Israel national trail is an adventure , you have the northen green part , and the southern Negev desert. Sometimes its tough , to not be surprised you should prepare a proffesional guide to be in your backpack with you.

Re: INT Guide and Maps

I'm eager to purchase the guidebook right now, but my hike is 14 months away. Can anyone guess how dated it might be when I finally hike the trail? Does anyone know when a new edition might be availalbe?

Thanks!

The guide is continuously updated and any new information about changes to the trail is posted here with a detailed map of each change.

The list of trail angles is  updated here

A new edition of the guide will be available in 2011 .

Re: INT Guide and Maps

There are several Stiematzky and Tzomet Sfarim stores in Tel Aviv, all should have the guide. I've personally verified the store at  Azrieli center (both Stiematzky and Tzomet Sfarim). If they can't get the guide they can ask to back order at the store.

Re: INT Guide and Maps

There are 12,500 km (7,800 miles) of marked trails in Israel. There are many secondary trails that cross the INT.

Don't hit the INT without any maps. Either the maps in English in the guide or the Hebrew maps from the SPNI. If you lose the trail and can't find your way back, you absolutely need maps.

Losing your way in the desert can turn into a serious problem. Without maps it can take too much time to find your way back on the trail. As a result you won't get to your water cache before sunset and it becomes dangerous to hike.  You ran out of water and...

Don't hit the trail without maps.

There are several reasons to carry a map not only in the desert. In spring time mainly in the north but not only, trail markers can hide behind freshly grown vegetation, which is sometimes 3-4 feet high. It is not too difficult to get lost for a while.

Dany Gaspar, one of the most experienced hikers in Israel,  who has hiked the entire length of the trail more than 7 times, always has a map with him. For first time hikers on the trail it is always important to carry a map.

Updated maps are coming out from the SPNI significantly slower than in the past. Only one new map was released in 2010 and it is not related to the INT. For most recent changes of the INT please click here
