Walk About Love 2010

Stumbled onto this website and didn't see any threads about this and thought it deserved one.

There is a pretty large group of folks walking the INT right now.....

http://www.walkaboutlove.org.il/

And will be continuing their journey until May 19th.   I am not so sure I would want to hike with a group that large...but obviously some people do.

I might even consider joining them in 2011 for the southern part and then take off on my own once reaching Arad. Slackpacking the desert and not needing to worry about cache water or getting food sounds appealing.  And it doesn't sound like 50 NIS/day would be much more expensive than buying water, food and cache water would cost on ones own and a lot simplier and SAFER for someone with no desert experience (such as myself.)

Re: Walk About Love 2010

I really hope they have increased the number of participants compared to 2009. They had approx. 100 people that started the hike in Eilat in 2009. Local thru hikers met them on the trail. I met them too during one of my day hikes. They looked like a group of hippies trying to pull a poor donkey that refused to carry the heavy load at a reasonable pace.

This year so far no report about them on the Hebrew forums. I am not sure this is the type of group that fits an experienced hiker. They are slow and do not hike the full length of the trail, at least that was the case last year.

100 people is a huge group for a hiking party.  A group half that size on the AT even during the off season would overwhelm most of the towns and resources on the path.

Slow I am okay with. But after watching some of their videos I have concluded that I would not fit in.  Might be fun to hang with them for a day, but I don't think I could handle a month.

But still it is cool they are using the trail.

Re: Walk About Love 2010

Yeah, I don't think I could hang with the Walk About Love group for too long, either, but it's neat to see all the different ways people use the INT. You'll likely run into people doing section hikes, school groups on educational trips, kids doing the trail (with parents) in connection with their bar mitzvah, political people trying to further an agenda, charity-oriented types walking to raise money, and spiritual seekers hoping to find enlightenment or something.

Obviously it's like this, to an extent, on all long trails...but in Israel I think hiking, and the act of walking the land, has an inherently different meaning.
