Data book

Is there any chance of producing a smaller, lighter pocket-sized data book? Or has anyone taken the data from your guidebook and condensed it down the just the bare essentials...stuff like "turn right onto dirt road, walk 1/2 mile, turn left onto paved road by tree, walk 2 miles, spring on left by green house ..."  in a line-by-line colume format. The Appalachian Trail has books like that and they're very handy for those who don't need all the extra details, history, etc.  Thanks--binny

Re: Data book

The INT has a lot of interesting sites and places that many hikers want to read some information about what they see on the way. The INT for many hikers is not just about making the distance. Also there is no commercial justification to publish two different versions of the guide. If you are concerned about additional weight, than the additional information adds about 50 grams to the guide's weight... Enjoy the hike on the INT :-)

Re: Data book

One compromise solution would be to have the book have two parts.  Part I - containing just the bare necessities to navigate the trail, find lodging, food, water etc.  And part II containing historical data about sites and all the other bonus  stuff that makes the guide 1.5lbs instead of only 3 oz.  Those who don't really want to read about the stuff don't need to bring it and can rip out of the book the relevent pages and put them in a ziplock.

Me personally, I am likely to read that type of stuff before going on the trip.  But only carry the very bare information.

Re: Data book

Another good option - chop up the book!  Carry only the parts that are relevant to the section you are hiking at the moment.

Hurts the resale value a bit, unless you can convince someone to purchase the "ultralight" version.

Re: Data book

When there are enough English speaking hikers on the INT, we'll definitley publish and ultralight version too.

Until then chopping is the solution to reduce weight, and this is what people do.
